This one here features Bob Mabege. Its a nice groove for sure. I think that this will be a big album because these songs sound so major.
Chachine! I know you have heard
this slogan at the beginning or ending of many hit songs. If you are
like me, I am sure you have wondered who is behind the music power
house we know as Sling Beats. Wonder no more because he has come out
into the lime light to promote the various projects that he is working
on. From K’Millian to Roberto, Namanje to Ozzy and Ty2 to Hamoba, his
unmistaken production and songwriting has taken these artists to the
top of the charts at one time or another.
I bring you the soft spoken multi-talented Entrepreneur and Entertainment Mogul; Chali ‘Bravo’ ‘Chachine’ Mulalami!
Real Name: Chali Mulalami.
Bio:
Born 28th Dec 1975. 4th born in a family of 5 (3 Boys and 2 Girls).
Father Winston Chansa Mulalami (Librarian). Mother Molly Kabwata
(Secretary).
His
list of jobs include Managing Director, Song Writer, Music Producer,
Studio Sound Engineer, Graphic Designer, Video Editor and TV
Director/Producer.
He
is behind the launching of numerous Zambian music artists' careers
namely K'millian, TY2, Namanje, Hamoba, Ozzy, Kanji, Mampi and Alice
Chuma. Other artists he has produced and promoted include Choklet,
Kelvin Mwesa, Mainza and Roberto.
For
the last 3 years he and Sling Beats have concentrated on developing TV
and Film production. They are currently producing two TV shows namely
The Ultimate Slinger (singing talent show) and Diggz Lifestye TV
Magazine (decor, landscaping, building and property in general).
He believes that if he can think through it he most likely can do it! And if he wants something enough he can have it.
He
has a deep love and respect for God and he tries to align himself with
that. He also believes that God helps those that help others so most of
his work is driven by a need to assist others. That said, He says he is
a free spirit building his life around things that make him happy!

Dj Wolf: How was it like for you growing up in the 80's?
Chali:
I grew up in new Avondale and if you know anything about new Avondale
back in the day you know it was fun. Played soccer in the roads, went
bird hunting,
Dj Wolf: Flew kites?
Chali: Yep flew kites,
Dj Wolf: Do you remember the music you loved back then?
Chali: Rap.
I am still hip hop. I was in a rapping dual called D&D black
with my friend Muma Seketa. That’s probably where I birthed my music.
Dj Wolf: Where did you do your Primary, Secondary and College Education?
Chali: I was at NorthmeadPrimary School, went to Rhodespark and Munali Boys for my secondary education. I was also at LusakaHigh School for a term. I did not attend college though. I had crash course street education. (Laughing)
Dj Wolf: Name the 1 single person who is your role model?
Chali:
I can't claim one because of all the interests I have. Having been a
Graphic Artist, Painter, Music Producer and Engineer and now a Video
Editor and TV Producer its hard for me to zoom in on one.
I
am inspired by every successful story, be it Mandela, Puff Daddy or Ice
Cube (his success as a Musician and Film Director) and my own father
who was a writer and poet. But Jesus is my single biggest role model!
Dj Wolf: What where you doing before you got into music?
Chali:
I consider my self an entrepreneur who's number one employee is me, in
other words am still doing what I was doing 10 years ago which is
business. It’s taken me through general dealing, Property Management
and now Entertainment.
Dj Wolf: When did you start Sling Beats?
Chali: Basically 2002 but I didn’t settle down till 2003 to formally register.
Dj Wolf: How did the name sling Beats come about? What is the inspiration behind the ‘Chachine’ slogan?
Chali:
I guess my Jesus thing got me searching for a name for the studio that
had some Godly meaning. Sling Beats was derived from David('s) Sling
which was inspired by the David & Goliath story. I still feel
like David and the world with its barriers is my Goliath. Going back to
the ‘Chachine’, I did not sit to think about that, it just happened and
I replaced the then ‘Thats Right’ just to localize it a little.
Dj Wolf: Who was the first artist you signed to Sling Beats?
Chali:
The first artist was Brian Siame, a gospel singer. It was a good album
from where I stand but it didn’t find commercial appeal. Probably
because were not really known at the time.
Dj Wolf: How did you hook up with K'Miliian?
Chali:
Like all the artists, he heard about the studio and got someone to
bring him over. Then we would ask artists to free style on a beat
(cruel) and when it was his turn,he totally killed it!
Dj Wolf: Wow! Has he left Sling Beats?
Chali:
Yeah. Well it was always fun for everybody including the artist. We
don't sign life time contracts of course. You will be surprised to know
that we had to renew the contract 3 times to record the 4 albums we
did. So I call it a break because we still enjoy a good business and
personal relationship.
Dj Wolf: So it was a personal choice for him and is not like he was not happy with the flow of things at Sling Beats?
Chali:
Everybody feels restlessness when you are in the same place for a long
time. Doesn’t necessarily mean you are unhappy. It could mean you think
you can do better for yourself and I personally encourage self
improvement and time away for personal reflection.
So
when he decided not to renew the contract for his 5th album I supported
him, he even asked me master his project and I started except time was
not with me.
Dj Wolf: I hope he will still be able to walk into a restaurant and pay for his food...You know what I mean?
Chali: One thing is, K'millian is a hustler. He is also very talented as a producer and an artist so I say the stars are on his side.
Dj Wolf: Are you the only Producer on Sling Beats?
Chali:
Now yes, but look at the credits and you will know I do get
contributions from other producers depending on the sort of album I am
producing.
Dj Wolf: Other than the artist on Sling Beats, what Zed artist are you feeling?
Chali:
This is ironic but I don't follow Zambian music much myself. I find it
keeps my work fresh so I really don't know what’s out at the moment. I
paid a visit to Roma Side Studios the other day and sampled B-Flow. I
think he’s tight!
Dj Wolf: How much do you charge for a beat? And where did you learn to produce?
Chali:
I don't charge directly since I promote the artists I produce for. I
earn through royalties but I have an open ear to other people’s offers!
Like everything else I do it’s all self-taught. My close friends even
have a nick name for me but I won't reveal it.
Dj Wolf: What equipment do you use at Sling Beats?
Chali: Nothing major. A Korg Triton keyboard is the more striking piece. But it’s a lot of software and a lot more brain.
Dj Wolf: I read on your profile that you are a Managing Director, Song Writer
Graphic artist, Painter, Music Producer and Engineer and now a Video Editor and TV Producer? How do you balance all these roles?
Chali:
Truthfully, even I don't know but usually I have to take a day off to
switch gears between them. I execute as the need arises. I have not
painted in a long time though so maybe that shouldn't count for now. I
will resume my painting when I am rich and retired.
Dj Wolf: What inspires you to do all these amazing things you are into?
Chali:
The world is very much my play ground. Am like a kid, I think about
something and I do it. People are told to be one thing; I guess I
didn't receive that memo.
Dj Wolf:
How did you feel when the Ben Blazer remix of Potential got a bigger
reception than the original song, which I assume you Produced?
Chali:
The story behind it is; Blazer was at my place and I had done the
original. He liked it so much he asked if he could remix it. That means
enhance it or/and make it a club mix. He did that very well, I was very
proud of what he achieved. That’s why I made it our promo track. I view
the remix as a collaborated effort because he used my original cords. I
wrote the lyrics and the melody which was the basis for the song. It
was a good move for all plus we are still making money off it. What’s
there to complain about?
Dj Wolf: How did you hook up with Radio and Weasel for Ozzy's 'Take My Heart'?
Chali: Before I traveled to Uganda for my TV production exploits, I made contact with ‘Goodlyf Studio’ of Uganda
through a friend. I took Ozzy along and we had a blast recording and
just hanging out in my spare time. It was eye opening and very fruitful.
Dj Wolf: You have written a lot of songs for a lot of artists, have considered singing yourself?
Chali:
I started out as a rapper than a singer and then I started producing. I
actually still sing in the studio, then I give out my songs to my
artists. That’s how most of them are born. That way I get to express my
love for singing but I have no plans to be a commercial singer. Am
writing and producing.
Dj Wolf: Shed some light on the two TV Shows you are working on.
Chali:
The first is Diggz Lifestyle Magazine - It’s about landscaping,
building construction, architecture and decor. Basically a property
based magazine TV show.
The Ultimate Slinger is a singing talent show with its own twists.
Chali: Both will premiere on ZNBC's TV 2 before we push them to the rest of Africa.
Dj Wolf: So which TV show took you to Uganda?
Chali:
I would say my works in the field took me there. I had 2 separate
meetings with 2 different stations, one a local Ugandan station and the
other an Eastern African station.
Dj Wolf: Tell me more about the Ultimate Slinger Show. Is it something like sing for a million or sing for a deal?
Chali:
Like most Talent/Reality shows, there's something for the winner to
walk away with but we have a unique approach to it. That’s for you to
find out once the show is running. I trust it will be interesting.
Dj Wolf: So what is happening at Sling Beats now other than the Ozzy Project?
Chali:
Well apart from being in production for the 2 TV shows and promoting
the Ozzy LP we are making a Various Zambian Artist DVD compilation as
well as just beginning work on Ozzy's greatest hits DVD project. So
it’s a full plate.
Dj Wolf: Anymore albums cooking for 2009?
Chali: Nothing solidly planned. We could squeeze in something before the end of the year but I will keep it a secret for now.
Dj Wolf: You are married right? Doesn’t your Entertainment lifestyle put pressure on your family life?
Chali:
Yes I am happily married and you must know I am no party freak or
nothing. My job is really insulated from the usual Entertainment drama.
I lead a very quiet life.
Chali:
Let me take this opportunity to invite anyone with a great script for a
movie to contact me. We are hoping to start shooting a movie early 2010.
Dj Wolf:
Well that’s one smart brother right there. Thank you for taking time to
do this interview. I am really humbled and excited to promote Sling
Beats. Chachine!
Chali: It was great talking to you too my man. Anytime!
